Translucency with depth: the three-sided glass façade
A striking feature of the stadium is the glass façade running along three sides with a total area of around 1,750 m². A total of 334 custom-made glass elements with a total weight of around 80 tons were installed – each up to 6 meters high. This extraordinary large-scale project placed the highest demands on planning, production, logistics, and installation.
Original Satinato® glass with a matt, etched surface inside and outside was used, designed as laminated safety glass made of single-pane safety glass. A low-iron white glass was used to specifically avoid any unwanted green tinting and achieve the most neutral, translucent light effect possible. This choice created a silky matt, almost fabric-like glass effect – a subtle visual boundary with high light transmission.
This creates a balanced interplay between openness and closure:
- Transparency for brightness and a feeling of space
- Translucency for privacy and consideration for the surroundings
The appearance of the glass façade remains discreet, calm, and understated—which is precisely why it is so architecturally impressive. After all, what looks simple is often particularly sophisticated.
Technology made visible: structural glass construction
The glass façade is not merely a design element, but an integral part of the supporting structure. It was constructed using the structural glazing method – the glass panes are structurally bonded and actively absorb wind loads. The glass thus performs functions in the building that go far beyond the usual.
A special feature is the technical lamination of the laminated safety glass: in addition to classic PVB film, ionoplast interlayers were also used. This combination offers increased strength and weather resistance – and enabled Glas Marte to implement a more economical solution with a contractor variant without compromising on technology or design.
The detailed design also deserves attention: joint geometry, glass connection, static clamping—everything was optimized based on defined criteria and executed with millimeter precision. Every connection and every shadow gap was designed and implemented with the utmost care.
A project with a signature style – and guaranteed quality
All glass elements were manufactured at our factory in Bregenz – in accordance with the highest quality standards and in close consultation with all project partners.
We would like to thank not only SC Austria Lustenau, but also the municipality of Lustenau, the construction management, the architects, specialist planners and contractors, with whom we were able to work together in a spirit of genuine trust and reliability.
This stadium is more than just a functional building – it is a place that creates identity and sets new standards in terms of both architecture and glass construction.
