Bird-friendly facade design

GM LIGHT CHROME & GM CHROME

Go Back

Modern glass architecture stands for openness, light and lightness – but for birds, it harbours invisible dangers. Transparent and reflective glass surfaces are not recognised by birds and are one of the greatest challenges in urban bird protection. For architects, planners and façade construction professionals, this means that bird protection is now an integral part of responsible building design.
Reflective motifs on glass surfaces make it possible to integrate this protection into the architecture without compromising on aesthetics. GM LIGHT CHROME and GM CHROME offer precisely this symbiosis of functionality and design.

Reflective coatings

Reflective motifs on glass surfaces make it possible to integrate species protection into architecture without compromising on aesthetics. GM LIGHT CHROME and GM CHROME offer precisely this symbiosis of functionality and design.

The partial chrome finishes are reflective glass solutions that are permanently applied to float glass, textured glass or coloured variants using a multi-layer process. This creates long-lasting motifs – as patterns, lettering or ornaments – that are visible to birds and also serve as a visual design element.

  • GM LIGHT CHROME offers a finer reflection, almost invisible at close range, but still effective in bird protection.
  • GM CHROME creates clear contrasts and a high mirror effect – ideal for applications with a strong visual presence.

The technology allows maximum creative freedom with proven protective effect – even in combination with insulating glass, ESG, VSG or as laminated glass with edge enamel. There is no static weakening as with conventional screen printing.

Culture meets bird protection

Technical advantages at a glance

Design freedom and functionality

  • Customised design with ornaments, lines or text
  • Reflective motifs to prevent bird collisions
  • Can be used on façades, in interiors, at trade fairs and in special constructions

Technology & processing

  • Robust multi-layer coating, durable and chemical-resistant
  • Can be processed into ESG, VSG, TVG and insulating glass

  • Large formats up to 2460 × 5900 mm possible

Architectural added value

  • GM LIGHT CHROME: Subtle reflection, almost invisible – ideal for filigree designs
  • GM CHROME: Higher contrast for maximum visibility and clear contours
  • Can be combined with solar control coatings (with reduced efficiency)

Proven performance

  • Tested according to light and radiation criteria (ift Rosenheim)
  • Data available via UNIGLAS® GlasGlobal – facilitates verification

Identification is the best motivation: bird protection must be understood as part of architecture for a symbiosis between humans and nature, which does not negatively impact design, but rather influences it positively.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about bird protection glass

How effective are the coatings?

The effectiveness has been tested according to the criteria of ift Rosenheim – reflective motifs are reliably recognised by birds.

Can individual designs be implemented?

Yes. Patterns, logos, texts or ornaments can be applied flexibly – even in gold or copper.

Is the glass suitable for renovations?

Yes. The solutions have already been used in historic buildings such as the WUK in Vienna.

Are large glass surfaces possible?

Yes – up to 2460 × 5900 mm are technically feasible.
