Bird-friendly construction with GM ICE–H®

Modern buildings with translucent glass

Go Back

Glass surfaces characterise modern architecture – but they harbour an often underestimated risk: millions of birds collide with transparent or reflective façades every year. Architects and planners are therefore faced with the task of designing aesthetically pleasing, light-flooded spaces while also taking species protection into account. The light-diffusing GM ICE–H® structural glass meets both requirements – with a solution that is both visually appealing and environmentally friendly.

How GM ICE–H® contributes to bird protection

GM ICE–H® has an irregular, lively surface that prevents reflections. The resulting diffuse light distribution avoids harsh shadows and makes the glass surfaces visible to birds. This makes the translucent structural glass a bird-friendly solution for all areas of buildings that let in light but do not require a direct view.

The Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach expressly recommends GM ICE–H® as a structural solution for bird-friendly construction – independent confirmation of its effectiveness and contribution to species protection.

GM ICE-H® structural glass

ICE–H® is more than glass

Two outstanding projects demonstrate how ICE–H® effectively combines design quality and bird protection:

Silesian Museum, Katowice

Glass blocks direct daylight into the underground exhibition rooms. The etched white glass shell – known as ice flower glass – creates a scale-like structure with a clear, green-free effect. Frameless clamp holders ensure a rear-ventilated, immaterial-looking façade that blends sensitively into the industrial environment.

Rohner Harbour, Fußach

An abstract glass façade made of large-format insulating glass panes (3 × 1.6 m), framelessly fixed with static bonding and selective steel straps. The colourless glass refracts daylight and artificial light spectrally, giving the building a changeable appearance. Multicoloured LEDs in the reveals enhance this effect. Multicoloured LEDs in the reveals reinforce this effect. At the same time, the glass was specifically chosen for its visual recognisability – for effective bird protection without compromising on design clarity.

ICE–H® is more than just glass – it shows how modern architecture and effective bird protection go hand in hand. An innovative solution for conscious construction that brings nature, space and design into harmony.
